Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol, can be used either as an alternative fuel or as an octane-boosting, pollution-reducing additive to gasoline.Ethanol production converts one bushel of corn into 2.8 gallons of ethanol and 17 lbs. distiller's dry grain. Distiller’s dry grain is a valuable source of protein for feedlots. The U.S. ethanol industry produced more than 3.4 billion gallons in 2004, up from 2.8 billion gallons in 2003 and 2.1 billion gallons in 2002.Ethanol has been blended in gasoline for decades—and billions of miles have been driven on ethanol-blended fuels.Corn is the primary feedstock for ethanol production. About 13 percent of the nation’s corn crop went into ethanol in 2005—some 1.43 billion bushels.Every major automaker in the world approves the use of E-10 Unleaded in their vehicles.About 30 percent of the nation’s gasoline contains ethanol—and most of that is in the form of E-10 Unleaded. In some areas of the nation, ethanol is blended at rate less than 10 percent due to state-specific regulations. (On the other hand, some states are considering increasing the standard blend to 20 percent ethanol.)
